The Blueberry season is on !
Once again another season has just begun! We have experienced a very favorable winter this year. Temperatures were moderate, (if you were a blueberry plant) and the bushes came through the winter with little to no damage. April arrived and ushered in warmer than normal temperatures with very little precipitation. This accelerated the spring by about 2 weeks ahead of normal.
As I reflect on the 2009 harvest season, a few noteworthy things happened. First, we had one of the cooler summers in history. As I recall, we had only 3 days in June that hit 90F. The rest of the summer was in the pleasant range of high 70’s to the low 80’s. This allowed the fruit to size exceptionally well.
We had rain events when we needed them, but not excessively wet to cause major problems. This allowed the flavor of the fruit to mature. I think we had as good of quality of fruit that I have experienced.
Wholesale prices for the fresh market were strong last year and should continue for the 2010 season. Demand for blueberries is strong for the processing market as more manufacturers are using blueberries in their product lines. We are proud to be an affiliated grower for Naturipe Farms L.L.C.
As I have stated in many of my past articles, the neutraceutical and health benefits of blueberries are driving the market. Everyone is eating more blueberries and blueberry products. Don't miss out on this blueberry health trend.
U-pick
Our U-pick season is now underway. I think the folks that picked their own berries in 2009 had some of the best picking around. It’s my goal to provide that again this year. For more information, please visit out U-pick page.
Ready Pick
We now have ready picked berries in our Farm Market. We will again offer fresh berries to be shipped to most states in the US. Fresh Blueberries may be mail-ordered to anywhere in the United States except, CA., NV. OR.. or WA. They are available in a 10lb mailing package. They are generally available from mid July through mid to late August, depending on the year's growing season.
